March 11, 2020 - Portland, OR
Overview
The workshop will explore approaches to student participation in HFOSS that provide more scaffolding and control for faculty taking initial steps with students. The discussion will focus on two areas:
1. HFOSS Kits
- HFOSS Kits provide a controlled, isolated practice environment where students can learn and practice open source skills. A kit contains:
- A project sandbox - copy of an HFOSS project or selected artifacts from a live HFOSS project
- Learning activities for the project sandbox
- Directions and notes for an instructor on how to use the Kit
- The goal of HFOSS Kits is to reduce instructor overhead in teaching basic open source skills. Kits will provide a predictable, controlled environment that can be re-set and re-used across multiple academic terms. Kits will also provide an opportunity for students to practice open source tasks repeatedly using real-world artifacts without needing to be concerned about burdening a project community.
- Kits will provide experience with complexity and scale since the artifacts are from real projects. They will not have the benefit of observation and interaction with a project community.
- Kits are intended as a stepping stone to participation in a live HFOSS projects.
2. HFOSS Learning Projects
- HFOSS Learning Projects are fully operational HFOSS projects that have student learning as a secondary objective. Characteristics of these projects include:
- Fully functional project with an active client community
- On-going product development, distribution, operation, and maintenance
- Core committers include at least some faculty or students
- Project welcomes and supports participation by students
- The goal of HFOSS learning projects include:
- To provide some projects where probability of successful student participation is higher because learning is an explicit secondary goal for the project
- To increase positive social impact generated by college students in computing majors
- There are already a handful of projects where faculty or college staff are the core contributors to open source projects. Several of these will provide a starting point for this effort.
At the workshop, short presentations will summarize existing work in these areas. Breakout groups will generate ideas for application of these approaches in specific courses, and create specifications and prototypes of learning activities to support the identified uses.
